Cheikh Amadou Bamba Parade

Location: Harlem, New York

Every year in New York, admirers of Chiekh Amadou Bamba (1850-1927) walk in a parade that celebrates his life and principles. A Sufi pacifist and founder of the Mouride Brotherhood, Bamba resisted French colonialism in Senegal using non-violent strategies. See Youtube videos of recent Bamba parades and the award-winning book about his life, The Saint in the City: Sufi Arts of Early Senegal by Allen Roberts and Mary Nooter Roberts.
