The Casbah is a music venue in downtown San Diego. Historically, a casbah is a citadel. It is where a local leader would live. The casbah could also be used as a defense if the city was under attack. The Casbah usually had high walls with no windows. People mostly built the casbah on hill tops because then it could be easier to defend. If a family built a casbah it would mean that they were wealthy because building a casbah is a sign of wealth. Around the year of 1830 (in Northern Algeria) there was a great number of casbahs being built, and those casbahs lasted for over 100 years. The word casbah can also be used to describe an old part of a city. In Morocco, there is a casbah that was built in 1121 – 1269. That casbah was then destroyed by the Almohads when they captured the Rabats. The casbah was then again rebuilt in 544 – 1150 and abandoned in (AH 595 / AD 1199).
